If your registration has expired, you can still donate your car in Tacoma. What matters for your donation is a valid Washington title in your name, not current tabs. You do NOT need to pay late fees, renew the registration, or get the car roadworthy. Sound Car Relief will accept most vehicles with lapsed registration, arrange a free tow, and you still receive a tax-deductible receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in Washington: when you donate, you sign your WA title over to Sound Car Relief. Once the tow truck picks it up from your driveway in Hilltop, North End, South Tacoma, or anywhere around Puget Sound, the vehicle becomes our responsibility. We handle the sale or recycling process; you do not need to visit the DMV to re-register. You should simply file a Report of Sale with the Washington Department of Licensing so the state knows the vehicle has changed hands and future liability is off your plate. We’ll walk you through that step so you can feel completely clear and protected.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have your Washington title
Expired tabs are okay; what we need is a valid WA title in your name. Grab the paper title from your files or glove box. If the car is sitting dead in your driveway in Central Tacoma, University Place, or Parkland, it does not have to move or pass emissions—you just need the title to start.
2. Call or submit our simple online donation form
Tell us the basics: year, make, model, where in the Tacoma or Puget Sound area the car is located, and confirm that the registration has lapsed. We’ll let you know on the spot if it’s eligible (nearly all expired-registration vehicles are) and answer any Washington-specific questions about paperwork.
3. Schedule your free tow anywhere around Tacoma
We arrange a professional towing company to pick up your car for free—whether it’s in a driveway in North End, a side street in South Tacoma, or a lot in Lakewood. The car does not need to be drivable or insured. You do not have to risk driving it with expired tabs; we handle the transport.
4. Sign the title over at pickup and keep your copy
When the tow truck arrives, you’ll sign the Washington title over to Sound Car Relief. The driver will show you exactly where to sign. We recommend removing your plates and keeping any paperwork the driver gives you so you have clear records of the transfer for your files.
5. File a quick Report of Sale with WA DOL
After pickup, you should notify the Washington Department of Licensing that you donated the vehicle. This is usually done online in a few minutes. It tells the state that Sound Car Relief now has the car, so future tickets, tolls, or issues don’t come back to you. We’ll remind you of this step.
6. Receive your tax receipt for your donation
Once the vehicle is sold or processed, we mail you a tax receipt. You can typically claim at least $500; if it’s over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C with your taxes. Your expired registration doesn’t reduce your deduction—your gift still benefits Heritage for the Blind nationwide.
Potential complications to watch for
Name on the title doesn’t match who is donating
Tip: If the title is still in a previous owner’s name, or has a different name due to marriage or a move, we may need a signed title from that owner or supporting documents. In Tacoma, this is usually solved by getting a duplicate or corrected title from the Washington DOL before scheduling pickup.
Lost Washington title for a car with expired tabs
Tip: We can’t complete a legal donation with registration alone. If you’ve misplaced the title, you’ll need to request a replacement from the WA Department of Licensing. Once you receive the duplicate title, we can move forward quickly—expired tabs are still not a problem once the title is in hand.
Existing liens or loans still shown on the title
Tip: If a bank or credit union is still listed as lienholder, we may need a lien release before taking the car. Check your paperwork; if the loan has been paid off, your lender can usually provide a simple release. Without clearing the lien, Washington won’t recognize a clean transfer to donation.
Tickets, tolls, or fees linked to your old plates
Tip: Expired registration and past tickets don’t usually block donation, but those obligations stay with you, not the car. Removing your plates at pickup and filing a Report of Sale with WA DOL helps make sure any new tickets after donation are not your responsibility in Tacoma or anywhere in Puget Sound.
