Losing a spouse, parent, or relative is incredibly difficult, and finding ways to honor their memory can bring healing and hope. If your loved one cherished their vehicle, donating it to Sound Car Relief can be a meaningful tribute. Not only will you be helping others, but you’ll also receive a tax receipt for your donation.
When you donate a car in memory of someone special, we ensure their name is recorded in our tribute program. We can send a notification card to their family, acknowledging your generous gift. Just remember, the vehicle title must be in your name to proceed with the donation.
How to make it happen
Verify Title Ownership
Ensure that the vehicle title is in your name and not the name of the deceased. If the title is still in the deceased’s name, consult with an estate attorney for guidance.
Complete Donation Form
Fill out our donation form online, indicating that the donation is in memory of your loved one. Provide their name and any personal message you wish to include.
Schedule Pick-Up
Choose a convenient time for us to pick up the vehicle. Our team will handle the logistics and ensure a smooth process for you.
Receive Tax Receipt
After the vehicle is sold, you’ll receive an IRS tax receipt. Remember, this will be sent to the current owner, so keep your records updated for tax purposes.
Notification to Family
If you requested, we'll send a tribute card to the family of the deceased, informing them of your thoughtful donation in their memory.
Common gotchas
Title in Deceased's Name
Tip: If the vehicle title is still in the name of your loved one, their estate may need to be settled before you can donate. Consult with an estate attorney.
Tax Receipt Details
Tip: Ensure you provide your correct details on the donation form for the IRS tax receipt. The receipt goes to the current owner, not the deceased.
Tribute Card Requests
Tip: Make sure to specify that you want a tribute card sent to the family and provide the correct address to avoid any delays.
If this path doesn't fit
If donating the car isn’t feasible due to title issues or other estate complications, consider selling the vehicle and donating the proceeds. You can also consider other forms of memorial donations, such as contributing to a charity that was meaningful to your loved one.
Tacoma DMV specifics
In Washington State, ensure you complete a transfer of ownership at the DMV before donation. This may involve submitting a title application and completing any necessary lien-release documentation. Remember to surrender the license plates to the DMV after the vehicle is donated to avoid any future liabilities.
