When you donate a vehicle through Sound Car Relief in Tacoma, your gift starts and ends locally. We arrange a free pickup right at your door—whether you’re in North End, South Tacoma, Hilltop, Stadium District, or out by Point Defiance. A licensed local tow partner comes to you, usually in a flatbed or wheel-lift truck, and handles all the heavy lifting. Your donated car, truck, SUV, van, or other vehicle is then sold, and the proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s work for people who are blind or visually impaired.
We serve the whole Tacoma and greater Puget Sound area—Central Tacoma, Eastside, Fern Hill, University Place, Lakewood, Fife, Milton, Puyallup, Gig Harbor, and beyond. You don’t have to drive anywhere, worry about buyers, or haggle over price. Once you schedule, we coordinate pickup around local traffic, parking, and access in your neighborhood, and you receive a tax receipt for your donation. It’s a straightforward way to turn an unused vehicle into real support for your community, while enjoying a hassle-free, at-home experience.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your Tacoma-area vehicle
Share a few basics about your car, truck, or other vehicle—year, make, model, and where it’s parked in the Tacoma area. Let us know if it runs, whether it’s on the street or in a driveway, and any access issues like alley parking or steep hills.
2. Choose a convenient pickup day and time window
We’ll work with you to set a pickup window that fits your schedule and location—whether you’re in downtown Tacoma, University Place, Lakewood, or more rural parts of Pierce County. Timing can vary slightly with traffic, ferries, and bridge routes around Puget Sound.
3. Prepare the title and clear personal items
Before the tow truck arrives, remove personal belongings, license plate frames, and garage door openers. Have your Washington vehicle title ready if possible. If you’re missing paperwork, let us know in advance so we can talk through local options.
4. Meet the driver or arrange key handoff
In most Tacoma neighborhoods, it’s best if someone can meet the driver to sign the release and hand over keys and title. If you can’t be home, we may be able to arrange a secure key drop, depending on where the vehicle is parked.
5. Free towing, sale, and tax receipt
Our local tow partner removes the vehicle at no cost to you—whether it’s running or not. The vehicle is sold, proceeds benefit Heritage for the Blind, and you receive a tax receipt. For donations valued over $500, you’ll also receive the IRS Form 1098-C.
6. Enjoy knowing you helped neighbors in need
Your local car donation supports services for people who are blind or visually impaired, including right here in Washington. You clear space at home, skip the hassle of selling, and know your old vehicle is doing real good in the community.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight Tacoma streets, alleys, and steep hills
Tip: Parts of Tacoma—like North Slope, Hilltop, and older alley-access homes—can be tricky for a flatbed. Tell us if your street is especially narrow, on a steep grade, or in an alley so we can send the right truck and plan safe access.
Gate codes, secure garages, and HOA rules
Tip: If your vehicle is in a secured garage, gated community, or HOA area in places like Stadium District, downtown apartments, or University Place condos, we’ll need gate codes, garage height limits, and any parking rules before scheduling pickup.
Permit-only or time-limited street parking
Tip: In permit or time-restricted zones near downtown Tacoma, hospitals, or the Tacoma Dome area, timing matters. Let us know your parking rules so we can schedule pickup within allowed hours and avoid tickets or towing issues.
Very rural or outlying Pierce County addresses
Tip: If you’re farther out—near Graham, Eatonville, Key Peninsula, or other rural spots—routes may be less frequent. Share detailed directions and any low-clearance bridges or private roads. We’ll coordinate timing that works with local tow coverage.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is complicated—for example, your car is in a tight downtown garage, stored on someone else’s property, or you’re between homes—we can still often help. Sometimes our Tacoma-area tow partners can meet you at a nearby wide street, public lot, or workplace in places like Tacoma Mall area, James Center, or Lakewood Towne Center. In limited cases, you may be able to move the vehicle to an easier pickup spot with a friend’s help. Talk with us about your exact situation and we’ll find the best local workaround.
Tacoma pickup coverage
Sound Car Relief serves all of Tacoma and the wider Puget Sound region around Pierce County: North End, South Tacoma, Eastside, Lincoln District, Fern Hill, Brown’s Point, and Ruston, plus suburbs like Lakewood, University Place, Fircrest, and Fife. We also reach outlying areas such as Gig Harbor, Puyallup, Spanaway, and Graham, though rural pickups may take a bit longer to schedule. In Washington, you’ll typically sign your WA title over to the charity, remove your license plates, and can notify the DOL of the sale/transfer. For tax purposes, keep the donation receipt and, if applicable, IRS Form 1098-C.
